At times I need to rename a computer, I'd like to do it from the console. Trigger the rename (PC001 -> Client001 for example) then have it trigger a DDR so the console updates quickly. Right now I have to remote to the computer, and either do it command line style or via dialog boxes. Sure, I can do it with OSD.. but that's overkill.
our helpdesk usually does rename devices manually and also delete the computer cert to get the new cert with the proper name because of 802.1x :)
Thanks for the suggestion! Since this idea was submitted, Microsoft has added the ability to rename devices directly from Intune.
As we review older requests, we'd love to better understand your use case. Are you managing devices primarily through Configuration Manager and not using Intune for day-to-day administration? Or is there a limitation in the native Intune tool that makes a Right Click Tools rename action valuable?
If this capability is still important to your organization, please share a bit more about how you're managing devices today and what problem you're looking to solve. That context will help us better evaluate the remaining need for this feature.
FYI - We use a Script in MECM to do this (if that's what you're using). It prompts for username, password, and then what new comp name you want.
Param(
[Parameter(Mandatory=$true)]
[string]$Username,
)
$credential = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential($username, (ConvertTo-SecureString "$password" -AsPlainText -Force))
Rename-Computer -NewName "$NewName" -DomainCredential $credential -Force -PassThru
Restart-Computer -Force
+1
this would still be helpful as it would take more steps to use another method even with the login credential input
It looks like we can only do this if we prompt for username and password because of the Kerberos double hop problem. Is this still desired if we prompt for username and password in the tool?
