Show Custom Status in Events

I have already had a ticket asking about this and was told it is not currently possible to do. It would be nice to be able to trigger some sort of custom return code such that the status in events is changed. This would work well with the new PowerBI data integration I have been told is coming in 4.4. My usecase example would be if we are enforcing an update to an app only if that app is not running. Instead of just not running at all which tells us nothing as to what happened, if there was some way to send a custom status, I could show that it skipped because the app was running. Thanks!
