Add Installed Software-Based Filter Within Entitlements for Update Scenarios

We would like to request the ability to apply filters within Entitlements based on whether a specific application is already installed on a device.

Current Challenge

At the moment, Entitlements are primarily focused on assigning software to users or devices. However, there is no straightforward way to target only systems where a particular application is already installed.

This creates challenges when deploying application updates. In many cases, we want to:

  • Deliver updates only to devices that already have the application installed.

  • Avoid forcing the installation of an application on all users within an entitled group.

  • Ensure updates can be deployed silently and proactively, even when the application is not actively being used.

  • Reduce administrative overhead by eliminating the need for separate collections, scripts, or complex targeting mechanisms.

Requested Functionality

Add an Entitlement filter option that allows administrators to target devices based on software installation status, for example:

  • Application is installed

  • Application is not installed

  • Specific version is installed

  • Version is lower than X

  • Version is higher than X

Example Use Case

An organization offers Adobe Acrobat Reader through an optional entitlement to a large group of users. Not every user chooses to install the software.

When a new version becomes available, administrators want to automatically deploy the update only to devices where Adobe Acrobat Reader is already installed. They do not want the update package to trigger a fresh installation on devices where the software was never installed.

Benefits

  • More flexible and intelligent update management.

  • Reduced risk of unwanted software installations.

  • Improved user experience through silent background updates.

  • Simplified application lifecycle management.

  • Less reliance on custom scripting and workaround solutions.

We believe this functionality would significantly enhance Application Workspace's software deployment and update management capabilities.
